Choosing your Wedding Photographer in El Paso: Does Venue Experience Matter?

October 2, 2016

Welcome to your El Paso Wedding Photographer blog! We’ve had a busy wedding season here in Texas this year! Now is the time for most of you soon-to-be brides to start planning your wedding for the next season. As a professional wedding photographer for the past 7 years at the time I’m writing this, I have some useful tips for you. So before you start planning let’s go over some of them:

Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life. There are plenty of crucial decisions that you make in order to plan your special day, and ensure it goes off without a hitch. One of the biggest decisions you will make is hiring your wedding photographer.

A lot of couples look through portfolios in hopes that the wedding photographer has worked their wedding venue before. However, when you are hiring a wedding photographer it isn’t about their familiarity with the venue. A great photographer can shoot anywhere, because they are passionate about their work.

The literal definition of photography is drawing with light. Successful wedding photographers understand that the key to capturing amazing photographs is understanding light and the impact it may have on any particular shot. The wedding venue plays no part in a photographer’s ability to capture good light and use it in order to capture spectacular photos.

Wedding photographers are naturally curious and love traveling to new places and shooting in new venues. When you choose a photographer that isn’t familiar with your venue you are hiring someone with a fresh perspective. You won’t end up with the same photos as every other wedding that’s been held there. Instead the result will be creative photos.

What’s more important is choosing someone who is passionate, and has experience in the style of photo that you are looking for. Whether you get along with them (because you will be seeing them for the entirety of your wedding day), whether they fall in your price range, and if they are available for your wedding date.

It’s an important decision, but don’t believe those articles that tell you venue experience is a must ask question. It shouldn’t be a deal breaker, if you have met with the photographer that ticks all the boxes. Besides, the wedding photographer can always check out your venue in advance to determine what additional lighting may be required.

There are plenty of questions that you should ask a potential wedding photographer, though. I will put together a comprehensive list of questions for you in the next few days so please stay tuned.

Cheers!

-Robert
